A visit to Llandudno’s Twin Town of Wormhout in Northern France proved to be a huge success for pupils from Ysgol Craig Y Don at the weekend (29th May -1st June)
For over 30 years schools from Llandudno have travelled to Wormhout to take part in the Wormhout Junior International Football tournament competing against teams from Wormhout and across Europe.
For the first time ever a school from Llandudno won the whole tournament outright.
On the Saturday morning of the visit games commenced from 9 am in this 8 a side competition with Ysgol Craig y Don eventually reaching the final.
Playing a very tough team from the Paris region in a nail-biting match which ended in a draw, the tournament was decided on a penalty shoot out. Again Ysgol Craig y Don rose to the occasion defeating their French opposition.
This achievement has never been Don before from Llandudno local schools so full credit to the players and school teachers and coaches involved.
In addition, the Ysgol Craig y Don team also played the Wormhout Juniors on Friday evening beating them in a very close game 5 goals to 4 to bring back the Royal Artillery Trophy. The players were just outstanding and very motivated.
The Mayor of Llandudno, Cllr Antony Bertola said “I am very proud of the pupils from Craig y Don school for representing Llandudno in the tournament. This is a fantastic achievement”
Cllr Greg Robbins, Chairman of the Town Twinning Committee added “A fantastic result by our young players who have represented the town so brilliantly both on and off the pitch. The trip also makes them aware of the massacre 85 years ago that resulted in the ongoing bond between Llandudno and Wormhout."
